Signs You Need to Change Your Air Filter

The air filter is an integral part of any vehicle as it keeps harmful contaminants out of the engine. To keep it functioning properly, it’s important that you change it about every 10,000 to 15,000 miles or when you notice one of the following warning signs.


Fuel efficiency decrease
A dirty air filter can lead to a decrease in your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. This is because the engine will need to utilize more fuel in order to make up for the lack of oxygen. You can save money on fuel by having a clean air filter, so be sure to keep an eye on your gas mileage.


Lowered horsepower
Similar to a fuel efficiency drop off, a decrease in your horsepower can indicate that you have a dirty air filter. If it becomes harder for you to accelerate your vehicle, it could mean there isn’t enough air getting to the engine.


Service engine light 
Poor airflow to your engine can cause deposits to build up on your engine. These deposits can then lead to your service engine light turning on, in which case you should bring in your car to the service department for a maintenance check. Strange sounds from the engine

A dirty air filter can result in less oxygen making it into the carburetor. When that occurs, unburnt fuel will go through the exhaust pipe, and you’ll be able to smell the gasoline. If you notice this scent, you should head to the service department.
