Windshield Wipers - What Should You Know

Inefficient wiper blades are not only a pain, but they are a danger to you and other drivers. If your car’s wiper blades aren’t doing their job, then your visibility is impaired which means you can’t see clearly enough to make safe driving decisions. Protect yourself and other drivers by learning how to care for and replace your car’s wiper blades.

When Should I Replace the Wiper Blades?

When the windshield is murky, only one thing is clear — it’s time for new wiper blades. As wiper blades wear down, they will begin to leave behind streaks or residue rather than clearing the windshield of precipitation. Older wiper blades might also squeak or skip when the wipers are turned on. If you notice one of these signs, it’s definitely time to replace them. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.

How Do I Inspect the Wiper Blades?

A visual examination of your car’s wiper blades can also tell you whether or not they need replaced. Check the blades themselves for signs of damage, like cracks or tears in the rubber. Examine the edges of the squeegee, too. If the edges are rounded, the blade is probably making poor contact with the windshield and not working well. Make sure the blades are securely attached to the arms, and that there are no signs of rusting or corrosion anywhere.

How Can I Protect the Wiper Blades from Damage?

As with most car parts, a little bit of maintenance can help extend the life of wiper blades. You can help your car’s wiper blades with a few simple steps, starting with routine cleaning. Every time your stop for gas, wash the windshield and gently wipe the blades down with a paper towel. If you live in an area with cold winters, get in the habit of lifting the wipers away from the windshield to prevent them from getting stuck to the windshield, and never use the wipers to clear ice from the windshield.
