How to Use Ford MyKey® with Young Drivers

Ford understands that not all teenagers make smart decisions all the time. This is why it created the Ford MyKey® technology. When activated, this system works to help promote safe driving habits in younger drivers and is available in most new Ford models. Here is a rundown on how to use this system.

Program MyKey

To use MyKey, you need to choose a certain vehicle key and have it in the vehicle with you. Place the selected key into the ignition to activate the selected MyKey settings. Now, whenever this key is used to start the vehicle, the MyKey settings will automatically turn on.

Driving Modes

There are four settings parents can choose to activate:

Belt-Minder®. With this feature activated, it will provide a six-second reminder chime every 30 seconds and keep the audio system muted until the front seat driver and passenger are buckled in. The message center will also display “Buckle Up to Unmute Radio.”
Top Speed Settings. If parents are worried about speeding, they can choose from four top speed limits: 65, 70, 45, and 80 mph. If this is selected, the vehicle will not go faster than the selected speed. In addition, it will sound speed warning chimes at 45, 55, and 65 mph.
Screened radio content. This setting allows parents to block all “explicit” stations on Sirius Satellite Radio.
Low Fuel Warning. The standard low-fuel warning appears at 50 miles to empty. The MyKey setting, makes this warning pop-up at 75 miles to empty.

Additional Features

For even more security, parents can choose to activate the following settings:

If your Ford vehicle is equipped with advanced driver aids such as BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert or Park Aid, these systems cannot be deactivated.
You can limit the audio volume to 44% of the total volume.
If the vehicle is equipped with AdvanceTrac®, which helps to limit tire spin, it cannot be deactivated.
