What a Week for the Predators!

It’s been a few months since we’ve seen the Nashville Predators on the ice, following their quick exit from the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, that hasn’t stopped Predators GM David Poile from making moves to improve a team that has been heading in the wrong direction for a few years. After making the Stanley Cup in 2017, the Predators have gotten further and further away from a Cup.

Last season though, the Predators saw some historic offense from their top guys. Captain Romani Josi became the first player in franchise history to hit the 90-point mark in a single season. In the process, he also set the single-season assist record with 73. The Nashville Predators had never had a 40-goal scorer before last season, and in 2021-22, they had two! Matt Duchene led the way with 43 goals, and right behind him was the man himself, Filip Forsberg with 42.

Remember those moves I was talking about earlier? THANKFULLY, that included the 8-year, $68 million contract extension that Forsberg signed on Saturday. Forsberg has been a key piece in the Predators offense for many years, and thanks to his big season last year, he is now the all-time leading goal scorer in franchise history.

That’s a guy that you want to keep around for as long as possible. And with Forsberg being just 27 years old, I sure hope that’s another 8-10 years at the minimum!

David Poile’s great offseason hasn’t stopped there though. Just a few days ago, he drafted RW Joakim Kemell with the 17th overall pick. A real steal, considering that most had Kemell as a top-10 prospect in this year’s draft!

And to top it off, the Predators beefed up their defense, by trading for veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh. McDonagh is a 13-year NHL veteran who has played for the Tampa Bay Lightning for the last 5 years. McDonagh is a two time NHL All-Star and two time Stanley Cup Champion. That kind of veteran presence will be very welcome on the Predators blue line!

All this action is getting me excited for hockey! Just a few more months til hockey is back in Smashville!
