Memorial Day is only a few days away, so as we close out this week, and go into a long weekend of sunshine and family fun, we hope that everyone will take a moment to reflect on why they get that extra day off from work.

Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, known as Decoration Day at that time. The holiday was proclaimed by Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the Civil War. Although Logan is credited with proclaiming the first national recognition of the day,  Mary Ann Williams is credited with originating the “idea of strewing the graves of Civil War soldiers—Union and Confederate” with flowers.

As time passed after the Civil War, Memorial Day took on a new meaning, as Americans began to use this day to remember the hundreds of thousands of troops lost in World War 1 and World War 2. In 1971, Congress standardized the holiday, officially declaring it “Memorial Day” and changing its observance to the last Monday in May.

The US honors fallen troops throughout each year, with days like Veteran’s Day and Armed Forces Day, however Memorial Day is the only holiday that is dedicated to those who have lost their lives in combat.

That is why Memorial Day is so special.

So as you head out on the water, fire up the grill, or simply enjoy your long weekend at home, take a moment to thank those who have laid their life on the line, so that you can do that.

All give some, but some gave all.
