59 years ago (yesterday), the most iconic muscle car in automobile history was born in Dearborn, MI. Over the years, the Ford Mustang has become a symbol of the American automobile experience, hitting the open road, and driving fast in a powerful car.

We’re so proud of how beloved this piece of machinery is and always has been.

To date, the Ford Mustang is the most popular muscle of all time, having sold over 10 million units worldwide. The 1966 Mustang, just the second one ever produced, holds the individual record, with over 600,000 units sold!

The Ford Mustang is timeless, beautiful, and a piece of American automotive history that will forever hold a spot in the hearts of car lovers.

Fun Fact: Ford accidentally sold the first Mustang ever made, and didn’t realize the mistake until it was almost too late!

Here’s the story: The first car built, a convertible with vehicle identification number 5F08F100001, was shipped to Newfoundland because it took longer to get to St. John’s from the Rouge assembly plant in Dearborn than to any other dealership, and Ford wanted every dealership to have a display model when sales began.

When the car arrived in St. John’s, it was put on display out by the street to attract customers, before sales officially began. Airline pilot Capt. Stanley Tucker walked in one day, and said, “I want that car”.

And just like that, Mustang #001 was his, before sales of the car even began.

It was months before anybody at Ford HQ in Dearborn knew Mustang No. 001 was gone, since most dealerships shipped their display Mustang back to Michigan.

Once Ford realized the mistake, they frantically called the dealership in St. John’s that had sold the car, but they hadn’t seen Captain Tucker in years. Ford executives tracked Tucker down after some time, and after two years of working on Tucker, Ford finally struck a deal with him for Mustang #001.

Tucker traded Ford Motor back their first ever Mustang, in exchange for the 1 millionth Mustang built, a 1966 loaded convertible!

Nowadays, that first ever Mustang sits proudly at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, where people flock to see it. Pretty cool story!
